1.0   PRIVILEGES AND OWNERSHIPS

1.1   Can I use the Pedigree Engine without having to register with a user account?

Yes.  For browsing, the Pedigree Engine is open to all.  For any database entry updates or adds, you will need to register with a user account that has a valid email address.  With or without a user account, there is never a cost for using the Pedigree Engine.

1.2   How do you maintain the integrity of a shared database and still allow universal update capability?

By establishing ownership of each database entry and providing three update privileges.  The three update privileges are:
    1) “Request approval” — Updates will be applied only after being approved by the owner of the database entry.
    2) “Immediate with notification” — Updates will be applied immediately and the owner of the database entry will be notified.
    3) “Immediate without notification” — Updates will be applied immediately and the owner of the database entry will not be notified.

1.3   What does it mean to be the owner of a database entry?

Ownership of an entry does not necessarily mean ownership of the animal.  It simply establishes the person responsible for the integrity of the entry data.  When a new breed database is first built, all entries are owned by the administrator for that breed.  When new entries are added to the database, they are owned by the person adding them.

1.4   Can I update a database entry without being the owner?

Yes.  Although ownership transfer of an entry can be requested at any time, you can update an entry (or request an update) without being the owner.  Under normal circumstances, an entry should only be owned by one of the members of the following “ownership hierarchy”:
    1) The actual owner of the animal.
    2) The breeder of the animal.
    3) The person who added the animal.
    4) The breed database administrator.

1.5   I am the breeder or owner of an animal with an existing entry.  How do I have the entry ownership transferred to me?

On the initial Update page, select “Yes” at the prompt “I would like to claim my ownership of this database entry.”  An ownership transfer request will be sent to the current database entry owner.  When the current owner approves the request, the entry ownership will be transferred and you will be notified.  The “ownership hierarchy” above should determine the final owner (the animal owner is favored over the breeder, the breeder is favored over the adder, and the adder is favored over the administrator).

1.6   Can I add a new database entry for an animal that does not belong to me?

Yes.  If you see that an animal needs to be added, please take the initiative and add it.  Of course, the owner or breeder may later request that you transfer ownership to them.

1.7   I added a new database entry.  I do not want to be the owner of the entry.  What can I do?

You can update the entry and reassign the breed database administrator as the entry owner.

1.8   I am the owner of a database entry.  I do not want anyone else making updates to it.  What can I do?

Set the “Update privilege for other users” to “Request approval” and then reject any update requests that are submitted to you.

1.9   I want to see all the database entries that I own in a single list.  How can I do it?

On the Tools page, you can select an option to list all the database entries you own.

2.0   USER ACCOUNT SETUP

2.1   What does the message “Confirmation pending” mean when I login with my User ID?

The message “Confirmation pending” means that your email address has not yet been confirmed and your User Account setup is not yet complete.  When your account is first added, or when you update your email address, an email is sent to that address by the Pedigree Engine.  There will be a Confirmation link in the text of the email.  After you receive the email, click on the link, and the Pedigree Engine will complete your User Account setup.

2.2   Why does my email address need to be confirmed?

There are three reasons that your email address needs to be confirmed:
    1) To ensure you are a real user and not a robot scanning the Internet.
    2) To enable you to send and receive update requests and notifications.
    3) To allow you to be able to reset your password by email if needed.

2.3   I never received the Confirmation email.  How do I have the email sent again?

After logging in, select the “Resend” email option that is presented.

2.4   I had the Confirmation email sent again, but I still did not receive it.  What can I do?

Check to see if the Confirmation email was possibly placed in your spam folder.  If you still haven't received the email after resending it, you might consider updating your account with another email address.

3.0   SEARCH FEATURE

3.1   What are the default Search parameters?

The default parameters are to search Name, Titles, awards, certificates, and Call/nick names for All words entered with Partial words matched.

3.2   How can the default Search parameters be changed?

Use the Advanced Search feature to change the default search parameters.

3.3   How do the parameters Any word, All words, and Exact phrase work?

Here is an example of the way these parameters work.  When grand and river are entered as search words —
    1) Any word would match animals named Grand River Rover, Red River Lassie, and River Lady Grand
    2) All words would only match Grand River Rover and River Lady Grand
    3) Exact phrase would only match Grand River Rover

3.4   How do the parameters Partial words and Complete words work?

Here is an example of the way these parameters work.  When laugh is entered as a search word —
    1) Partial words would match animals named Laughing Gravy and Laugh Out Loud
    2) Complete words would only match Laugh Out Loud

3.5   Does Advanced Search have any other parameters?

Yes, a search can be refined by filtering on a Birthdate range, Sex, and, if applicable, Color or variety

3.6   I searched the field Call/nick names for my girl “Cherub” but didn't match her.

Although an animal's Call/nick name is often displayed in the Pedigree Engine with quotes, leave the quotes off when searching.  This guideline also applies to fields such as Registration numbers.  Leave the brackets off when searching.

3.7   I searched the field Birth Country for any animals born in France but didn't match any.

When doing country searches, enter the two-character country code, not the country name.  The two-character country code for France is FR.  It is also possible that no entries are currently recorded in the database as having been born in France.

4.0   SELECTED NAME

4.1   What is the “Selected Name” and how is it used?

The Selected Name is the most recent database entry that you selected or acted on in some way.  The Selected Name is always displayed on the lower tool-bar at the top of every Pedigree Engine page.  Except for Search, Mating, and Add, a Selected Name is needed for all Pedigree Engine functions.

4.2   How do I get a Selected Name?

A good way to get a Selected Name is to do a search.  The name returned at the top of the search results list will be Selected Name.  Click any other name in the list to make that name the Selected Name.

5.0   HOW TO ADD, UPDATE, DELETE

5.1   How do I Add a new entry to the database?

First make sure you are logged in with your Pedigree Engine user account.  Then press the Add link at the top of the page.  The only required field will be the name.  The name must be unique: it cannot already exist in the database.  Although Add does not require a Selected Name, having one can be useful.  If the entry you are adding is related to the Selected Name, certain fields will be auto-filled depending on the relationship of the Selected Name (Sire, Dam, or Siblings).

5.2   How do I Update an existing entry in the database?

First make sure you are logged in with your Pedigree Engine user account.  Then, when you have a Selected Name, press the Update link at the top of the page.  Update any fields you would like.  The final Update will be made based on the update privilege of the database entry.

5.3   How do I Delete an existing entry in the database?

First make sure you are logged in with your Pedigree Engine user account.  Then, when you have a Selected Name, press the Update link at the top of the page.  A “Delete” button will appear on the next page.  Press the button to Delete the entry.  The final Delete will be made based on the update privilege of the database entry.

5.4   I want to Delete an entry, but when I select Update, the “Delete” button does not appear.

You cannot Delete an entry that has children.  You will need to either Delete or disconnect the children from the entry before you can Delete the entry.  Once the children have been removed, the “Delete” button will appear, and you can complete the deletion.

6.0   SPECIAL FIELDS

6.1   How do I Select a Sire or Dam on Add, Update, or Mating?

First press the “Select” button for the Sire or Dam.  A text box will open up.  Enter part of the Sire or Dam name in the text box, then press either the “Select” button again or the Enter key.  If the entered text matches only one Sire or Dam, the connection will be complete.  If the entered text matches more than one Sire or Dam, highlight the name you want from the list of names that are displayed.  Finally, to connect the highlighted name, press either the “Select” button again or the Enter key.  Remember, to ensure successful matching, the entered text should only include part of name itself and should not include any titles.  At the same time, the entered text can be the Call/nick name.

6.2   How do I enter a Birthdate on Add, Update, or Search?

Although Pedigree Engine dates are stored and displayed in numeric year-month-day format, they can be entered in any format you want.  A special parsing routine will accept almost any date format you enter and will translate it into numeric year-month-day format.

6.3   How do I enter a Country Code on Add or Update?

If you know the Code, enter the Code.  If you don't know the Code, enter the first part of the Country name.  If you are uncertain about the Country name, press the “Select” button and then Select the Country you want from the drop-down list.

7.0   PHOTOS AND LINKS

7.1   Can I add a photo or a link to a database entry?

Yes, you can add both a photo to a database entry as well as a link to another Internet location (where additional information about the animal or kennel can be provided).

7.2   How do I add a photo?

On a database entry, on Update or Add, next to the “Photo” field, press the “Select” button.  Underneath the “Photo” field a new field will appear with a button to the left titled “Upload Photo File.”  There will also be a button to the right titled something like “Browse” or “Choose” (the actual title will depend on the browser and language you are using).  Press this right-side button and select or open the photo file you want from your computer.  Once you've selected the photo file name, press the “Upload Photo File” button.  Your file will then be copied up to the Pedigree Engine and attached to the database entry.

7.3   What are the guidelines for the photo file?

The file must be a JPG, GIF, TIF, BMP, or PNG file.  It cannot be over 1 MB in size (photos that large do not display very well).

7.4   I want to see all the database entries that have a link or a photo.  How can I do it?

On the Tools page, you can select an option to list all the database entries that have a link or a photo.

8.0   LANGUAGES

8.1   What are the advantages to displaying multiple languages?

Besides just being polite, there are two major advantages.  First, by displaying multiple languages, updates and additions to the database by users from other countries are encouraged.  Second, because request and notification messages are sent in the language of each user, database entry updates and transfers between users of different languages can be achieved.

8.2   Are there any current limitations to the languages that the Pedigree Engine can display?

Yes.  At the moment, languages are limited to those with the “Latin1” character set (includes those with extended Latin characters such as “” or “”).  Latin1 is equivalent to ISO-8859-1.

8.3   What about extended characters such as “” or “” in the animal name?

Extended characters are allowed in animal names, as well as user names and kennel names.  When searching for these names, equivalent non-extended characters may be entered in place of the extended characters (for example, “a” in place of “”, “e” in place of “”, and so forth).

8.4   And what language is closest to the heart of the Pedigree Engine?

Why, PERL of course.

9.0   COEFFICIENT OF INBREEDING

9.1   Where is the Coefficient of Inbreeding calculation displayed?

The Coefficient of Inbreeding calculation can be selected on both the Pedigree and Mating tabs.  The calculation can be done over either 5 generations or 10 generations.

9.2   What formula is used for the Coefficient of Inbreeding calculation?

Wright's Equation (where the calculated value is often referred to as “F”).

9.3   How did you verify the accuracy of your calculation?

Both by setting up text-book pedigrees and matching the “F” value with what was stated it should be, as well as by calculating the value for some dogs that are held in the Swedish Rasdata database and comparing the calculated value with the displayed Rasdata “inbreeding” value (which was usually, if not spot-on, then very, very close).
